The Fragile Key Series
Veil of the Void
2025, acrylic on maple panel, 48 in. diameter
Veil of the Void examines grief, ecological loss, and the quiet distances that open between perception and emotion. At the top of the composition, a squirrel and the native plants surrounding it sit poised on the edge of a dark, fluid form. This black void descends like a spill or waterfall, creating a sense of slow unraveling. The mirrored reflection below appears momentary—an identity or awareness dissolving into shadow.
The work draws on the Japanese concept of Ma, which understands negative space as an active presence rather than an absence. The exposed wood grain encircling the image is intentionally open, emphasizing the tension between what is seen and what is withheld.
Through this balance of form and emptiness, Veil of the Void considers what is lost, what endures, and the quiet intervals that shape both.
The series begins with Echo in the Grain.
