The Fragile Key Series
Cabinet of Curiosities
2025 · Acrylic on maple panel · 36 in diameter
Structured as a mandala-like cross-section of life, Cabinet of Curiosities begins at the smallest scale—subatomic particles and cells at the center—before expanding outward into tissue, organs, and fully formed organisms. The outer ring gathers flora, fauna, a human fetus, and a distant galaxy, suggesting that all life shares a common structure and material origin.
Inspired by Victorian curiosity cabinets, the painting invites close looking and open-ended interpretation. Some organisms are drawn from real specimens, while others drift into the imagined. This mix of observation and invention poses a quiet question: in a time of ecological and cultural upheaval, how do we know what is real?
Ultimately, the work reflects on how knowledge is collected and understood, and on the enduring role of wonder—scientific and artistic—in helping us find our place within the wider continuum of life.
