Red X FB Artist in Residence project 2019
Created during an artist residency with Facebook AI, this mural depicts bioluminescent ctenophores from the deep waters off the Farallon Islands, offering a meditation on the limits of human perception and the humility required in scientific and technological discovery.
The work features local species—Modeeria, Lampocteis, sea gooseberries, and a newly identified form nicknamed “Red X”—rarely observed by human eyes. Their translucent, bioluminescent forms serve as metaphors for the unknown, suggesting that, like the natural world, emerging technologies often evolve beyond our immediate comprehension.
Special thanks to biologists Wyatt Patry and Steven Haddock of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and to Rebecca Johnson and Rich Mooi of the California Academy of Sciences for their expertise and guidance.
