Red X FB Artist in Residence project 2019

When commissioned to create a mural for Facebook AI, I chose to bring into focus an extraordinary group of organisms rarely seen by human eyes: local ctenophores (comb jellies) inhabiting the deep waters beyond the Farallon Islands. The mural depicts Modeeria, Lampocteis, several sea gooseberries, and a newly discovered species scientists have nicknamed “Red X.” These ethereal, bioluminescent creatures became a metaphor for the unknown—serving as a quiet reminder of the humility required when advancing new technologies, whose full implications often remain beyond our comprehension. Special thanks to biologists Wyatt Patry and Steven Haddock of the Monterey Bay Aquarium for their invaluable guidance, and to Rebecca Johnson and Rich Mooi of the California Academy of Sciences for their expertise and support.
