Impact

20” x 16”, acrylic on maple panel, 2019

Impact reflects on the complex relationships between human behavior, introduced species, and biodiversity loss. Free-ranging domestic cats have become one of the most damaging invasive species worldwide, posing significant threats to both wildlife and public health. In this painting, House Finches struggle to build a nest within a gothic-inspired bird feeder, a subtle commentary on the unintended consequences of well-meaning actions. Meanwhile, invasive Acacia trees spread across the background, mirroring the silent proliferation of species that disrupt fragile ecosystems. Rather than offering judgment, the work invites viewers to consider their own role in shaping the balance between care for individual animals and stewardship of entire ecological communities.
