Francisco's Ash Box

Acrylic on curly maple wood box,
20 x 10 x 8 inches, 2023

Created in memory of Francisco Robles, this work honors the often-invisible legacy of collaboration—paying tribute to the hands, materials, and shared devotion that quietly shape an artist’s path.

This work was created in memory of master woodworker and longtime collaborator Francisco Robles, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. For more than two decades, he played an essential role in Bozic’s studio practice—crafting wooden panels, framing finished works, and applying varnishes with exacting care. His quiet artistry and unwavering support were integral to the evolution of the work.

To honor his life and legacy, mutual friend and fellow woodworker Dave Craig built a box for Robles’ ashes from curly maple—a wood frequently chosen for its beauty and character. In recognition of Robles’ deep appreciation for underwater paintings, particularly octopuses and jellyfish, the box was adorned with these creatures. Among them appears the so-called eternal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii), capable of biological immortality, as a symbolic gesture toward his enduring presence in the creative process.

The piece stands as both a personal tribute and a testament to the unseen hands that shape an artistic practice—an act of remembrance rendered in wood and water.
